Weddings in Florida: Faith, Family, and Sacred Promises

Weddings in Florida are filled with sunshine, family, and faith. From Jacksonville and Orlando to Tampa, Miami, and communities stretching from the Panhandle to the Keys, weddings are joyful celebrations—but they are also sacred moments where promises are spoken before God and loved ones.

In Florida, a wedding is more than a beautiful day.
It is a public covenant meant to be honored long after the photos are taken.

f you have been asked to officiate a wedding—or feel called to serve couples in this role, even for one meaningful ceremony—Florida offers a clear and welcoming path.

This guide explains both the legal requirements and the pastoral calling with warmth, clarity, and care.

Do You Need Ordination to Officiate a Wedding in Florida?

Yes—for Christian weddings.

Florida allows weddings to be solemnized by ordained ministers authorized by a recognized religious organization. For Christian ceremonies, ordination is the normal and trusted path.

Florida also allows:

  • Notaries public
  • Certain civil officials

However, for a Christian wedding, ordination provides appropriate spiritual authority and pastoral standing.

Florida does NOT require:

  • Statewide officiant registration for ministers
  • Court authorization for ordained ministers

County clerks or venues may request:

  • Proof of ordination
  • The name of the religious organization that ordained you

Ordination establishes both legal authority and spiritual trust—for the couple, their families, and the public record.

Florida Wedding Law in Plain Language

Florida’s marriage laws are county-based and easy to understand.

Marriage License

The couple applies at the county clerk’s office in any Florida county.

Waiting Period

  • Florida residents: 3-day waiting period
  • This is waived if the couple completes a qualifying premarital course
  • Non-residents: No waiting period

License Validity

A Florida marriage license is valid for 60 days.

Ceremony Location

The wedding may take place anywhere in Florida.

Return Deadline

After the ceremony, the completed license must be returned to the issuing county clerk within 10 days.

Florida does not recognize self-uniting marriages. A qualified officiant must solemnize the ceremony and complete the legal record.

A Note for One-Time Wedding Officiants in Florida

Many couples ask someone they already know and trust—a family member, close friend, or respected Christian mentor—to officiate their wedding. Often this calling is for one special day, not a long-term ministry role.

If that is you, you are welcome here.

Ordination through Christian Leaders Alliance works well for one-time wedding officiants because it provides real ministerial authorization, not self-appointment. Even for a single ceremony, the responsibility is real.

As a one-time officiant, you carry two important roles:

Legal Responsibility

Completing and returning official documents correctly

Pastoral Responsibility

Guiding a bride and groom through vows spoken before God

Ordination helps you step into that moment with confidence and peace—honoring the couple, their families, and their faith.

One wedding can shape a lifetime. Serving it well matters.

Step-by-Step: How to Become Ordained in Florida

Step 1: Wedding Officiant Skills Course

A free, study-based course through Christian Leaders Institute prepares you to:

  • Lead a Christ-centered wedding ceremony
  • Speak vows and blessings with warmth and clarity
  • Offer calm pastoral presence
  • Understand legal responsibilities

You are prepared with care—not rushed.

Step 2: Study-Based Ordination

Study-based ordination affirms your calling and authorizes you to officiate weddings with credibility.

This is not instant ordination.

It is rooted in study, prayer, and formation.

Step 3: Local Endorsement

Ordination is meant to be recognized in real community.

A pastor, church leader, or ministry mentor—someone other than yourself—affirms your character and readiness to serve.

You are supported by Christian community.

🌾 Williams’s Story: A Florida Wedding Officiant’s Experience

My name is William Toti, and I live in Brevard County, Florida, in the United States. I am a retired U.S. Navy captain. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1979, I spent my career in the Navy, eventually serving as captain of a nuclear submarine and as commodore of a submarine squadron.

One of the most formative events of my life was being present at the Pentagon during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The short version of the story is that I lived while too many of my friends did not. That event profoundly shaped my worldview.

After retiring from the Navy in 2006, I spent 15 years as a business executive, hiring as many military veterans into civilian jobs as I could. During this time, I realized that many veterans were struggling to transition to civilian life. To address this, in 2022 I wrote a book aimed at helping veterans enhance the skills needed for post-military success. However, I quickly learned that many of the challenges veterans face have less to do with secular skills and more to do with moral and spiritual instability.

I came to Christ later in life. This experience led me to shift my focus from solely addressing secular job skills to helping military members and veterans see Jesus as the anchor of stability they need in their lives. I realized that Jesus is the ultimate solution to the struggles many veterans face.

As a result, I pursued chaplain and divinity training at Christian Leaders Institute and now serve full time ministering to veterans and international seafarers working on cruise ships based in Port Canaveral, Florida. From officiating weddings to addressing pastoral needs, I am grateful for the training and ordination opportunities offered by the Christian Leaders Alliance.

Ordination will complete my portfolio of tools for ministering to veterans and seafarers in my community. The ability to baptize, counsel, marry, and provide other pastoral services will allow me to offer comprehensive ministry to those coming to Christ or struggling in their relationship with Him.

The free ministry training has been invaluable, as it allowed me to explore my calling without committing substantial financial resources upfront. It provided the opportunity to gain the training necessary to discern whether I am truly called to full-time volunteer ministry—a path that requires significant personal and financial commitment—without incurring debt.

I ask for your prayers for my ministry. Please pray that God connects me with veterans and seafarers who are struggling and could benefit from pastoral care. By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, I have already had the privilege of helping some individuals find Christ, and I look forward to continuing this work for many years to come.

The Ordination Program

Christian Leaders Alliance was built for moments like this—when someone steps forward not for a title, but because people they love have asked them to stand with them.

Since 2014, CLA has helped Christians step into ministry roles with confidence, preparation, and integrity—not through shortcuts, but through a process grounded in care, prayer, and accountability.

In Florida, people value sincerity.
CLA ordination is sincere.

It is designed for:

  • Church members sensing a call
  • Family members asked to officiate
  • Lay leaders in ministry moments
  • Volunteers who want to serve responsibly

The process includes:

  • Study and preparation
  • Biblical grounding
  • Local endorsement
  • Prayerful readiness

When you stand at a wedding, you are:

  • Standing between families
  • Speaking words remembered for years
  • Signing a record that becomes part of a family’s story

CLA ordination prepares you to serve with a steady hand and a shepherd’s heart.

And yes—ordination is free.
But free does not mean careless.
Calling is a gift, and gifts are handled with respect.

How Ordination Meets Florida’s Real Needs

Florida weddings bring together what matters most:

  • Two lives becoming one family
  • Clear legal authority and public record
  • Strong community witness
  • Promises spoken with seriousness
  • Faith named openly before God

Ordination prepares you to stand at that crossroads—grounded, gracious, and faithful—whether you serve once or many times.

Free — But Not Cheap

Ordination is offered freely, but never casually.

Free does not mean:

  • Instant
  • Automatic
  • Transactional

Ordination is about calling, preparation, and responsibility.

What is freely given is meant to be carried with honor.
