The Fire/EMS Chaplain Ordination Program is a specialization in the Licensed Chaplain ordination pathway through the Christian Leaders Alliance.

This pathway builds upon the ministry base of the Licensed Chaplain Program, preparing chaplains to offer spiritual care, officiate life ceremonies, and minister during significant life events.

The Licensed Chaplain pathway lays the groundwork in:

  • chaplain presence
  • officiating competence
  • pastoral confidence
  • spiritual care
  • clergy credibility

Why Start with the Licensed Chaplain Pathway?

A Licensed Chaplain is often a volunteer or part-time minister who brings Christ’s presence into challenging life situations through prayer, listening, encouragement, and pastoral care.

Licensed Chaplains may serve through weddings, funerals, memorials, blessings, visitation ministry, and community outreach.

For those called to Fire/EMS ministry, this foundation matters because emergency responders regularly encounter trauma, loss, danger, and emotional strain. Firefighters and paramedics often carry unseen burdens, moral stress, and accumulated grief. The Licensed Chaplain pathway forms ministers able to step into emergency culture with humility, professionalism, and spiritual wisdom

A Testimony of Presence and Service: A Fire Service Chaplain’s Calling

My role as a fire service chaplain is rooted in a lifelong commitment to service, compassion, and care for those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. Grounded in my Christian faith, my chaplaincy is intentionally inclusive and non-proselytizing, focused on supporting every firefighter, first responder, and family member regardless of belief, background, or life experience. Chaplaincy within the fire service is not about preaching—it is about presence, trust, and walking alongside people during moments of crisis, stress, transition, and loss.

I began my fire service journey in 1987 as a Volunteer Firefighter and EMT with Grays Harbor Fire District #10. Over the decades, I have served in numerous leadership roles, including Assistant Chief, Fire Commissioner, and, beginning in January 2026, Fire Chief. These experiences have given me firsthand understanding of the physical demands, emotional weight, and organizational pressures faced daily by first responders and their families. In February 2024, I accepted the appointment as Chaplain for the Aberdeen Fire Department, further expanding my commitment to caring for those within the profession.

My chaplaincy approach centers on presence over words, confidentiality, and deep respect for individual beliefs and experiences. I strive to provide support without persuasion, offering a calm and trusted presence while helping personnel and families access peer support, mental health care, and community resources when needed. Working closely with command staff, peer support teams, and behavioral health professionals, my goal is to strengthen resilience, wellness, and long-term sustainability within the department.

Alongside public service, I remain active in community and church leadership, currently serving as an Elder at Wishkah Valley Community Church. While my faith shapes my values of compassion, integrity, and servant leadership, my chaplaincy role focuses on meeting people where they are and honoring the diversity of spiritual perspectives present within the fire service. Ongoing education through Christian Leaders Institute has further strengthened my skills in pastoral care, crisis response, leadership development, and ethical ministry.

I view fire service chaplaincy as a calling to stand beside those who serve others—especially during their most difficult moments. My commitment is to serve with humility, professionalism, and respect, providing steady support for personnel, their families, and the broader community. Through presence, listening, and compassionate care, I seek to ensure that no first responder walks through hardship alone.
