What Is The Sports Chaplain Ordination Program?

The Sports Chaplain Ordination Program is a specialization within the Licensed Chaplain Ordination pathway through the Christian Leaders Alliance. It prepares Christian leaders to serve athletes, coaches, teams, and athletic communities through spiritual care, pastoral presence, prayer, encouragement, Scripture support, and relational ministry within competitive sports environments.

Study-Based, Not Instant

Sports ministry requires credibility, maturity, and trusted presence. Athletic organizations, schools, and teams look for chaplains who demonstrate character, preparation, and clear ministry boundaries.

This program is built around:

  • Training first (study-based formation before approval)
  • Endorsements (local confirmation of character and calling)
  • Profile and review steps (clarity and accountability)
  • Commissioning encouraged (laying on of hands recommended)

This is not an instant ordination. It is a study-based program.

A Specialization Built on the Licensed Chaplain Foundation

The Sports Chaplain Ordination Program is a specialization in the Licensed Chaplain ordination pathway through the Christian Leaders Alliance.

This pathway builds upon the ministry base of the Licensed Chaplain Program, preparing chaplains to offer spiritual care, officiate life ceremonies, and serve communities during meaningful life moments.

The Licensed Chaplain pathway lays the groundwork in:

  • chaplain presence
  • officiating competence
  • pastoral confidence
  • spiritual care
  • clergy credibility

From that foundation, the Sports Chaplain specialization develops ministry readiness specifically for service within athletic environments.

Why Start with the Licensed Chaplain Pathway?

A Licensed Chaplain is often a volunteer or part-time minister who brings the presence of Christ into life’s most meaningful moments through spiritual care, pastoral presence, prayer, encouragement, listening, and officiating ceremonies.

Licensed Chaplains may serve through weddings, funerals, memorials, blessings, visitation ministry, and community outreach.

For those called to sports ministry, this foundation matters because athletic environments require emotional maturity, relational trust, and clearly defined ministry boundaries. Athletes and coaches face pressure, competition stress, injury recovery, identity challenges, and personal transitions. The Licensed Chaplain pathway forms ministers who can enter these environments with humility, professionalism, and trusted spiritual presence.

Are You Called to Serve as a Sports Chaplain?

The Sports Chaplain Ordination Program develops Christ-centered leaders prepared to serve athletic communities with biblical confidence, emotional wisdom, pastoral compassion, and ethical ministry practice.

Sports chaplaincy is ministry within competitive and relational environments.

A Sports Chaplain may encounter:

  • performance pressure and identity struggles
  • injuries and recovery challenges
  • team conflict and leadership stress
  • career transitions or retirement from sport
  • family and relational challenges
  • moments of victory, disappointment, or public scrutiny
  • confidential conversations requiring trust and care

In these moments, a calm Christian presence offers encouragement, prayer, and hope while respecting team structure and leadership authority.

This program is designed for volunteer, part-time, and ministry-minded leaders seeking credible Christian chaplain training for athletic ministry. Graduates may pursue recognition and clergy credentials through the Christian Leaders Alliance.

From Service and Sacrifice to Sports Ministry Calling

My faith journey was profoundly shaped in 2002 during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks while serving as a New York City Police Detective. Witnessing both tragedy and extraordinary human resilience led me to fully surrender my life to Christ and embrace a calling centered on service, leadership, and spiritual care. That same year, I joined Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale, Queens, New York, where I grew under faithful pastoral leadership and became actively involved in ministry service. Over time, I stepped into leadership roles and later served alongside my wife, Lynette, in Hospital Care Ministry as a New York State Chaplain from 2012 to 2018.

Before my law enforcement career, I proudly served 14 years in the United States Army as a Sergeant. My military service included deployments to Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, where I was honored to serve with distinction and received multiple commendations for leadership and dedication. These years strengthened my understanding of teamwork, sacrifice, and the importance of moral and spiritual resilience during difficult circumstances.

Following my military service, I continued serving others as a Detective with the New York City Police Department. Throughout my law enforcement career, I received specialized training in interviews and interrogation, gang investigations, executive protection, fugitive apprehension, and investigative operations. I was honored with a New York City Council Civil Service Citation along with more than 30 medals recognizing meritorious service and excellence in duty. Across both military and police service, I developed a deep commitment to supporting individuals during life’s most challenging and defining moments.

Alongside my public service career, I have devoted more than 40 years to martial arts and athlete development. For over a decade, I have served as a Head Instructor and Coach with United Xtreme Martial Arts, mentoring hundreds of children, teenagers, and adults. My role extends beyond physical training—I invest in character formation, discipline, perseverance, leadership development, and personal growth. Coaching became a natural ministry environment where faith, mentorship, and athletic training intersect.

Through years of working with athletes and young people, I recognized how deeply athletes need spiritual encouragement, mentorship, and Christ-centered guidance. Sports provide a powerful platform for shaping identity, character, and community. This realization led me to pursue training through the Christian Leaders Institute Sports Chaplain Program so I can serve athletes, coaches, and teams through prayer, encouragement, and faithful spiritual leadership both on and off the field. As a husband, father, mentor, and leader, I believe sports ministry is a calling to build stronger individuals and stronger communities grounded in faith.
