Are you called to bring comfort and hope to people in their deepest moments of grief? Do you feel led to serve at funerals, memorials, or celebrations of life with dignity, love, and biblical guidance? Becoming a Funeral Officiant through Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) and Christian Leaders Alliance (CLA) is a powerful way to step into this ministry.
A Funeral Officiant serves a vital role in helping families say goodbye to their loved ones with compassion, grace, and hope in Christ. This is not just about leading a service—it’s about offering spiritual presence during life’s hardest moments.
Whether serving in a church, funeral home, or community venue, the Funeral Officiant helps plan and lead meaningful services that reflect the life of the deceased while pointing others to the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ.
Grief is a sacred space. It calls for someone who will walk with others in their sorrow—not with easy answers, but with a presence that reflects the peace of Christ. A Funeral Officiant steps into that gap, becoming a vessel of compassion and truth.
This role also opens up meaningful ministry opportunities. Many who attend funerals are disconnected from the church but are spiritually open. A caring Funeral Officiant can offer a glimpse of God’s love that may stay with them long after the service.
Step 1: Take the Funeral Officiant Skills Course
The Funeral Officiant Skills Course at CLI is a free online class that trains you in both practical and spiritual aspects of officiating. Topics include:
This course is designed to help you minister with confidence and compassion.
Before beginning your specialty training, you’ll complete the Multiply Christian Leaders Getting Started Class—a short introduction to CLI’s platform and mission.
After completing the training, you can pursue clergy recognition with the Christian Leaders Alliance. This includes:
You do not have to be a full-time pastor. You simply need a calling, training, and a commitment to serve.
Christian Leaders Institute offers a free, high-quality, donation-supported training path. There are no financial barriers to entry. This ministry training is accessible to anyone who desires to follow God’s call—regardless of income, location, or background.
Nathanael Varney is a testimony to how the CLI Funeral Officiant program equips everyday believers to step into extraordinary ministry.
“My name is Nathanael Varney. I took this class to be able to get the credentials to do funerals.”
Nathanael’s journey took a turn when his father, the pastor of their church, stepped down to follow another calling. Because Nathanael had served faithfully as the assistant pastor, the congregation unanimously voted to appoint him as their new shepherd.
“I am honored to be placed in such a position of leadership. I know that it is God’s church, and I am just His servant—placed here to shepherd His flock under His leadership and guidance.”
He knew he needed training, but traditional seminary was out of reach. That’s when Christian Leaders Institute stepped in.
“I am grateful for Christian Leaders Institute, which helps people like me—who can’t afford college—pursue training to follow God’s call.”
Now, Nathanael continues to take classes through CLI, working toward becoming a fully ordained pastor. But it all began with one step: answering the call to serve as a Funeral Officiant.
