A Life Changed by Christ
Responding to the Gospel at a Promise Keepers Conference
John traces an important turning point in his faith to 1995, when he attended a Promise Keepers conference at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana.
After hearing Wellington Boone preach and responding to the altar call, John accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. His relationship with Christ continued shaping the direction of his life in the years that followed.
Faith Through the Seasons of Life
Marriage, Family, Retirement, and New Opportunities
At the time of his testimony, John had been married to his wife, Carey, for 32 years. Together they had raised three children, all of whom were married.
John had also recently retired from Ford after 34 years of work and was looking forward to another joyful family milestone: becoming a grandfather for the first time.
Retirement opened a new season of life, but John did not know that wedding ministry would soon become part of it.
An Unexpected Invitation
A Wedding Request He Never Expected
John was not planning to become a wedding officiant and had not been pursuing wedding ministry. That changed when his niece asked him to officiate her wedding.
The request brought mixed emotions. John felt honored that his niece trusted him with such an important role, while also feeling the weight of responsibility that came with helping lead a meaningful wedding ceremony.
What began as a family request became an opportunity for John to consider how he could serve his niece through faith, preparation, and care.

John did not want to approach his niece’s request casually. He prayed for God’s guidance and also sought advice from people he trusted in his Christian life.
He spoke with his pastor, his wife Carey, a close Christian friend, and one of the elders from his church before moving forward.

Seeing the Wedding as Another Opportunity to Serve
After seeking guidance, John became grateful for the opportunity his niece had given him. He described himself as humbled that she had chosen him for such an important role.
John’s response reflected what he described as a servant’s heart. His relationship with Jesus had helped him through many challenges and continued teaching him how to grow as a Christian.

Finding Wedding Ministry Preparation Through Christian Leaders
John’s search for wedding officiant preparation eventually led him to Christian Leaders Institute and Christian Leaders Alliance. He described the opportunity for training and ministry recognition as an answer to prayer.
The training gave John a pathway for approaching his niece’s wedding with greater preparation and confidence while remaining grounded in his Christian faith.
